What actually costs energy in a shower

eighteen months with ME/CFS, PT background in energy conservation. here are the questions I keep seeing, answered as honestly as I can. why does a 10-minute shower wreck me for hours? three costs stacked at once: orthostatic load (standing forces compensatory cardiac output, worse with any POTS component), thermal vasodilation from hot water (blood pools peripherally, heart works harder to compensate), and cognitive sequencing (what step am I on, did I shampoo already). any one of these alone might be manageable.

all three for 10+ minutes is why the crash lands 24-48 hours later, not right after you step out. does sitting actually help? significantly. shower chair cuts the orthostatic cost almost entirely. I held out four months bc it felt like giving up.

it isn’t. it’s just accurate energy accounting. morning vs evening? evening, after a rest period, tends to run cheaper. orthostatic intolerance is worst in the first hour or two after waking.

worst possible time for a shower is right out of bed. the part nobody mentions: blow-drying. arms overhead = sustained isometric load plus heat exposure. this alone triggers PEM for some people.

sit down, rest your elbow on something, or air dry. not glamorous but the math is different. what’s the one thing that changed your shower cost the most?
