Weight loss and milk supply fwiw

been away for a bit, sorry about that. so i’ve been on semaglutide for a few weeks now and i’ve noticed my milk supply has been decreasing. i’m combo-feeding kenji, but i was wondering if anyone else has experienced this. i’ve been trying to increase my water intake and pump more frequently, but it’s just not the same.

does anyone know if the weight loss from semaglutide affects milk supply? i’ve read that it can affect hormones, but i’m not sure how that translates to breastfeeding. my pediatrician says it’s probably just a coincidence, but i’m not so sure. has anyone else had a similar experience?

i’m 7 months pp now and i’m trying to make sense of all the changes in my body. any insights would be helpful

you’re right that “weight loss from semaglutide affects milk supply” is a two-part question. The general caloric deficit from rapid weight loss can impact supply, that part holds. (whether semaglutide)

That 7-month postpartum window is such a wild time. Your body is starting to feel like your own again, but it’s also throwing all sorts of new signals at you. I can understand why your pediatrician would frame it as a coincidence.

There isn’t a well-known direct mechanism where semaglutide itself shuts down milk production, so it’s a logical first assumption from their perspective. But I’d gently push back on whether “coincidence” is the whole story. It feels more likely to be an indirect effect.

Semaglutide is incredibly effective at lowering appetite, which means it’s really easy to fall below the calorie and hydration floor your body needs to make milk, especially if you’re combo feeding and the demand signals are already a bit mixed. It’s not the drug depleting your supply, it’s the new caloric deficit doing the work. Deficiency by omission, 😅
