Venlafaxine weight gain

Hey there, seeking some insights for a friend who’s been on venlafaxine for 6 months and noticing a steady weight gain. Before starting antidepressants, they were pretty consistent with their weight, but since switching from sertraline to citalopram and then to venlafaxine, the pounds have been piling on. In about one and a half years, they’ve gained 2 stone and are now in the overweight category for the first time.

Any similar experiences out there? Is it possible that the medication could be contributing, or could there be other factors at play? Appreciate any insights!

It’s definitely possible that venlafaxine could be contributing to the weight gain. Some antidepressants, including venlafaxine, can affect appetite or metabolism. But on the other hand, there could be other factors at play too, like changes in diet or exercise routine.

Weight gain is a known side effect of some antidepressants, including venlafaxine. It’s worth discussing with a healthcare provider to explore options and potential alternatives.
