got my tryptase tested after getting dx’d. came back 4.8 - doc says normal, within range. but i was flaring that exact same week: flushing, hives, dermographism going wild, red welts from scratching. i left the appointment confused.
like, if my tryptase is normal while i’m literally in an active flare, what does that even mean. is it not mcas or does the test not work that way. turns out nobody explains the timing part: tryptase level is only really elevated during a flare or in that immediate window after. test you on a normal day?
looks fine. baseline just sits lower when you’re not actively degranulating, even if mast cell activity is happening. my allergist finally broke this down when i asked point-blank. now i’m wondering how many of us got missed or delayed dx because the timing was just…
