I recently had an ultrasound that showed my gallbladder is wrapped around a 2cm gallstone (and possibly more), and I’m now waiting to hear about surgery options. My symptoms include reflux and chronic hiccups, though Buscopan has been helping a bit with the hiccups.
However, I’ve also been experiencing severe itching and stinging on my torso and arms, with the right side being much worse. My GP says it can’t be related to the gallbladder, as I would be jaundiced if that were the case. Does anyone know if this could still be connected to the gallbladder, or is it more likely something to do with the liver? I had tests done three months ago that were normal, but I’m having another blood test this week to check again.
If anyone has suggestions on how to relieve these symptoms, I’d really appreciate it. I don’t think my GP fully understands how bad the itching and discomfort are. I’ve been feeling so unwell that I even looked into whether I could afford a private surgery (but unfortunately can’t), as speeding up the treatment would make a huge difference. At the very least, if I could find some relief from this one symptom, it would help me feel a bit better.
Hi Xyzine!! I’ve been dealing with this too! I also experience yellowing off and on—not all the time, but when it happens, it’s definitely related. My GP prescribed a strong antihistamine called Fexofenadine Hydrochloride 180mg, which has given me some relief, especially since I was at the point where I just wanted to rip my skin off . Thankfully, I’m scheduled for surgery soon to have my gallbladder removed. Wishing you the best of luck!
Hi there, I’m really sorry to hear you’re going through all of this—it sounds incredibly uncomfortable. While your GP’s advice about jaundice and the gallbladder might be accurate (since jaundice often indicates a bile duct obstruction or liver issue), it’s still possible for gallbladder problems to cause other symptoms, like itching, even without jaundice. Itching (also called pruritus) can sometimes be linked to issues with bile flow, which can be affected by gallstones or gallbladder problems. This can happen even without visible signs of jaundice. Liver issues, as you mentioned, can also cause similar symptoms, but since you had normal liver tests recently, that seems less likely, though it’s worth keeping an eye on.
The fact that Buscopan has helped with your hiccups is interesting, as it suggests some relief from your symptoms might be found with medication, so I’d recommend talking to your doctor again about more specific treatments for the itching. In the meantime, things like cool compresses, antihistamines, or moisturizing creams (like those with calamine or menthol) might offer some temporary relief from the itching.
If you’re feeling like your concerns aren’t being fully heard, it might be worth seeking a second opinion from a specialist, like a gastroenterologist or a hepatobiliary surgeon, who could help guide you through treatment options and make sure everything is properly evaluated. In any case, I hope the new blood tests give you more clarity and that you find some relief soon. Hang in there!
