been asked this a few times so here’s how i actually think about it. the septum wipe: yes, swab the rubber stopper before each needle insertion. 70% isopropyl, let it dry 10-15 seconds. most people skip the dry part. that matters more than the wipe itself. needle touching septum before swabbing: one brief insertion into an intact, factory-sealed stopper on first use is low risk. the stopper is sterile from manufacturing. not zero risk, but not “I’ve contaminated everything” territory either. if it bothers you, draw and discard that dose. what people actually underprice:
- recap technique - recapping by feel in dim light is how you stick yourself
- storing open pens without the cap fully seated
- injecting through clothing (yes people do this)
- same needle reuse past 2-3 injections, tip gets barbed fast my actual protocol: swab, air dry, insert straight in, slow draw, recap using the scoop method. takes 45 extra seconds. laminated card on my fridge reminds me when i’m half asleep at 5am. the chaos-injection scenario happens. just don’t make it a habit.
