Metformin vs spironolactone, six months apart

put on metformin first (500mg, titrated up over a few weeks per my endo, not saying what anyone else should take). glucose numbers moved fast. fasting was averaging 98-102, dropped to the low 90s within about 6 weeks. CGM showed way less of that afternoon spike I used to get after lunch.

cycles didn’t really change though. still 32, then 40, one skipped month in there. spiro got added around month 4 bc the hair shedding wasn’t budging. counted strands on my brush for two weeks before starting as a baseline, then again at week 8.

went from an average of ~80 strands to ~45. not gone, but noticeable. androgen labs backed it up, DHEA-S came down from where it was at diagnosis. what’s interesting is the two drugs are doing completely different jobs and nobody explained that upfront.

metformin touched the metabolic side (glucose, insulin resistance) and did nothing for hair. spiro touched the androgen side and did nothing for glucose, my CGM average didn’t move at all after adding it. I was expecting more overlap tbh. I log the shedding counts and glucose readings on the same chart in careclinic so I can actually see which line moved when, instead of trying to remember if it was month 3 or month 4.

that overlay is the only reason I caught that spiro wasn’t touching my glucose at all. anyone else on both and noticing they’re solving completely separate problems instead of one thing fixing everything? and did your cycles actually respond to either one or did that stay stubborn regardless?

Your finding that metformin moved glucose and spiro moved androgens separately makes sense given their primary actions. I’ve tracked similar distinct responses with my own medications targeting different pathways. The complexity comes from how reducing overall metabolic load, which metformin does
