Melatonin for sleep with ME/CFS

i’ve been trying to figure out my sleep issues with me/cfs and i stumbled upon melatonin. does anyone have experience with taking melatonin for sleep when you have me/cfs? i’m specifically wondering about the dosage - i’ve seen everything from 0.5mg to 5mg recommended online. my doc says to start low and see how it goes, but i’d love to hear from people who have actually tried it.

i’ve been tracking my symptoms in careclinic and i can see that my sleep quality is definitely linked to my energy crashes, so i’m hoping melatonin can help. has anyone found that melatonin helps with the fatigue aspect of me/cfs, or is it just for sleep? and what about the timing - should i take it right before bed or a few hours before? i’ve heard that taking it too close to bedtime can actually interfere with your body’s natural production of melatonin.

any insights would be really helpful. i’m also curious if anyone has noticed any differences in their cognitive function when taking melatonin - i’ve been experiencing some brain fog lately and i’m not sure if it’s related to my sleep or just the me/cfs. thanks in advance for any advice or experiences you can share.

considering the complexities of me/cfs, I’m surprised by the emphasis on melatonin as a potential solution. When you say “i’ve been tracking my symptoms and i can see that my sleep quality is definitely linked to my energy crashes,” it resonates with my own experiences with ms, where fatigue patterns are a major hurdle. However, I’m not convinced that melatonin is the key to unlocking better sleep and energy levels.

In my own experience, addressing underlying issues like spasticity and cognitive fog has been more effective in managing fatigue. Regarding dosage, I’d advise consulting a clinician for personalized guidance, as they can help determine the best course of treatment. It’s also important to consider the potential interactions b/w melatonin and other medications, as well as the individual’s specific health needs.

Ultimately, while melatonin may be helpful for some, it’s crucial to approach its use w/ caution and under the guidance of a healthcare professional.

when you ask if melatonin helps “with the fatigue aspect… or is it just for sleep,” that distinction really matters for understanding brain fog too. are you expecting it to actively clear the fog or just make you more rested to deal with it?

Taking melatonin too close to bedtime can interfere with natural production, you mentioned that.

imo.

did you notice more brain fog the next morning from 5mg doses?

Have you had ur morning melatonin levels tested? ✌️
