How do you even afford daycare after baby?

it’s 7 months now and Mateo is starting to get more aware of things, like he smiles when i sing to him and actually reaches for his toys. it’s so cute but also…reality is hitting hard. my leave is over in a few weeks and i’ve been looking at daycare. i saw one place that looked really nice, clean, good reviews, close to home.

the price though? it’s basically my entire restaurant manager salary before taxes. i don’t even know how people do this. my husband’s income is okay, but after taxes and mortgage and just…living…there’s not a lot left.

we talked about me staying home but that’s just not feasible either. i miss my job, my coworkers, feeling like myself outside of mom mode. i keep seeing these posts about how expensive formula is, or diapers, and yeah, that’s a lot, but daycare feels like a whole other level of insane. i feel like i’m stuck between a rock and a hard place.

i want to go back to work but i can’t afford to pay someone else to watch him. does anyone have any tips or tricks? how did you manage this financially?

that whole “daycare feels like a whole other level of insane” sentiment is so relatable. iirc, the cost of full-time infant care can easily exceed mortgage payments in many areas. it’s wild.

the “staying home isn’t feasible” part resonates too - people underestimate the career momentum lost, not to mention the personal fulfillment gap. i’ve seen some folks make it work by cobbling together a mix of part-time work, family help, and then finding a daycare that offers a sibling discount eventually. also, some workplaces offer dependent care FSAs which can at least offer a tax break on some of those costs.

it’s not a magic bullet, but it helps chip away at the sticker shock a bit. fwiw, for tracking expenses and seeing where the money actually goes, the visual charts on the CareClinic app (the dark mode ones, specifically) are surprisingly helpful for spotting trends you might otherwise miss.
