Help on mucus problem

I’ve been taking Levothyroxine for hypothyroidism for about 2.5 years. Initially, I felt significantly better, but after 3 or 4 months, I started experiencing sinus drainage. While I usually have allergies and am accustomed to some drainage, this has been markedly different. It’s especially severe in the morning—so thick that I can’t swallow it or even gag it out. It feels like a large lump in my throat, and eating something usually helps alleviate it. My family is tired of hearing my complaints, insisting it’s just normal drainage, but I know it’s not the same. I’ve dealt with this long enough, and despite two rounds of antibiotics, there’s been no improvement. Has anyone else experienced something similar? Could I be having an allergic reaction to something in the Levothyroxine? I’ve emailed my doctor to request a referral to an ENT specialist. If anyone has encountered this issue, please share your experience

Thank you!

Thank you for sharing your experience. It’s understandable to be concerned when you notice a significant change in symptoms, especially after starting a new medication like Levothyroxine. The thick sinus drainage and the sensation of a lump in your throat sound uncomfortable and frustrating, particularly since they’ve persisted despite treatment.

While Levothyroxine is generally well-tolerated, some individuals do report unusual symptoms, and it’s possible, though less common, that an allergic reaction or sensitivity could be contributing to your issues. Since you’ve already tried antibiotics without improvement, consulting with an ENT specialist is a wise step. They can provide a thorough evaluation to determine if there’s an underlying issue with your sinuses or throat that needs addressing.

It’s also worth discussing your symptoms with your prescribing doctor to see if any adjustments to your medication or additional tests might be necessary. Your health and comfort are important, and seeking further professional advice will help you get to the root of the problem. If others have had similar experiences, I hope they’ll share their insights.
