Dermatologist vs immunologist: tryptase labs changed everything

i spent three years going to a dermatologist for flushing and urticaria. every visit was the same - antihistamines, topical steroids, “try reducing stress.” flushing would hit within 15 min of a trigger, urticaria an hour later on my forearms, but no labs ever. he treated it like contact dermatitis or stress-related. never once offered tryptase testing.

finally saw an immunologist last year and she ran tryptase immediately. baseline was elevated. that’s when things clicked - in hindsight, the derm never connected the vascular piece (flushing) to the immune piece (hives), so mast cell involvement never came up on his radar. urticaria got the protocol and cromolyn conversation, flushing got a shrug.

three years of missing the actual pattern. did anyone else get stuck in dermatology first? what made your doc actually test for mast cells instead of just assuming it was skin stuff? curious if you also had to bounce between specialists before finding someone who understood the systemic angle.
