Aura recognition slowing down on topiramate

so i talked about this before but it’s gotten worse lately. my aura still happens, like i log the visual stuff, but the actual ‘recognition’ part feels slower now. it’s almost like it’s happening but my brain fog from topiramate is blurring the edges around it, you know? it’s like a softer onset instead of a clear there it is moment.

it’s not that the aura itself changed its pattern, just my ability to pinpoint it. the visual scotoma is still there, same shape, same progression. but my read on it is delayed. and this is really messing with my nurtec timing.

first few months on nurtec it would kick in within 15 minutes if i took it right at aura onset. now it’s more like 45 minutes to relief bc i’m just not spotting the aura until it’s already a few minutes in. i almost thought the nurtec was failing or i was building tolerance, but when i actually looked at my log, the start of the visual aura wasn’t delayed, just my ability to clearly register it. so it’s not the abortive failing, it’s the topiramate making me slower on the uptake.

anyone else get this? where a preventive med changes how you perceive a prodrome or an aura, instead of changing the actual symptom itself?

Freshly tracking my own crashes has made me realize how crucial it is to log every detail, and when you say “my ability to clearly register it” is delayed, that really resonates with me. I’ve been using the medication tracker to cross-correlate my symptoms and medication timings, and it’s been helpful in identifying patterns, like how my cognitive crashes seem to be linked to certain medication combinations, which might be similar to how your topiramate is affecting your aura recognition.

i get how you’re trying to separate the aura from the perception of it, but when you say “softer onset instead of a clear there it is moment,” i wonder if the topiramate brain fog is
