the myth i believed until my first aura: that i’d just “know” it was migraine and not something scarier. i did not know. i sat in my car in a parking lot with a zigzag scotoma eating my right visual field, then my right hand fingers went numb, then i couldn’t get the word “steering wheel” out. called my sister instead of 911 which in hindsight was dumb, and she made me go to urgent care. they did the full stroke workup anyway. FAST checks, asked me to smile, push against their hands, the whole thing. i remember being almost offended, like, i have a neurologist, i have topiramate in my bag, why are you treating me like this might be a stroke. and that’s the actual point i didn’t get at the time: presentation is the same. a one-sided visual field cut plus numbness plus word-finding trouble looks identical whether it’s a TIA or your first aura. the only thing that tells the two apart is the timeline, did it resolve in under an hour, did a headache follow it, and you don’t get to skip that workup just because you’re pretty sure it’s migraine. headache showed up about 25 minutes after the numbness started. postdrome for the rest of that day was just fog, worse than my usual topiramate fog even, couldn’t do basic math for hours. neurologist later said aura symptoms change attack to attack too, so “i’ll recognize it next time” isn’t even reliable for people who’ve had years of aura, let alone a first episode. anyone else had a first aura get the full stroke workup treatment. imo did they explain what actually made them rule it out, or just send you home once the hour passed?
