everyone assumes if your hands flare, your knees are coming next. my rheumatologist literally said “small joints first, then everything” at my appointment, and i believed it. but that’s not how it’s worked for me. i’ve had my C3/C4 drop hard enough to trigger visible swelling in my hands and feet for months.
ESR and CRP go bananas. but my knees? my hips? nothing.
my hands hurt so bad i can’t hold a pen, then a flare settles and it’s just localized. not spreading. i’ve talked to other people with lupus and RA who say the same thing. small joint inflammation can be severe without being predictive.
it’s not that progression never happens. it’s that the “small joints first = everything” narrative treats it like a law when it’s just unpredictable. does anyone else’s autoimmune skip around like this?
imo.
