for me it was 4 doctors and 18 months. first three said stress or bad sleep. my regular doc ran an ANA, saw it was positive, then just wasn’t interested. had to push hard for a rheumatologist referral. rheumatologist looked at my ANA and anti-dsDNA, checked my complement (C3/C4 were low), saw my ESR spiking. like, okay, this is lupus. ESR and CRP aren’t always high at appointments, but they spike before flares. it wasn’t that nobody could diagnose me - most primary care docs just don’t know what they’re looking for. what actually helped: i started tracking before appointments. dates, which joints, fatigue level, photosensitivity, anything weird. when you can show a pattern instead of just saying “i feel bad sometimes,” they take it different. positive ANA alone doesn’t mean much - you need the full panel. anti-dsDNA, complement levels, inflammatory markers. idk, that’s what tells the actual story. the diagnosis is fast once you get to rheumatology. the hard part is getting the referral. if your primary care doc won’t refer you, ask for it in writing. make it their liability. don’t let them tell you “your labs look normal” and leave it at that. how many doctors did you have to see before someone connected the dots?
